The Department of Possibilities

The Department of Possibilities is an experimental interactive artistic research project which supports the playful exploration of new possibilities for the self. As an artist I describe myself as a Possibilitist, defined as one who seeks to see the possibility inherent in any material, relationship, or situation.

Books

My artist/educator practice and daily studio work has led to four connected book projects.

• A Manual for Teaching Artists: A critical text detailing methodologies for artists, focusing on

developing a teaching philosophy from studio practice.

• Living as an Artist Every Day: A book of strategies focused on maintaining a rigorous creative practice,

sustaining stamina, and overcoming creative blocks.

• A Comprehensive Guide to Collage Techniques: A technical and philosophical exploration of structural

layering, material handling, and the physical manipulation of paper.

• Teaching Creativity to Children: A guide for parents and educators discussing methods of teaching art

which encourage individual expression.

The Neo-Quietism Project

An ongoing exploration of the meditative and restorative potential found in the experience of looking at and making abstract art.

Teaching as Part of an Artistic Practice

A philosophy rooted in the belief that artists who teach are not simply participating in art-adjacent work but can see teaching as an equal part of their practice as their studio work. Art education executed by artists is a potent extension of artistic exploration, and gives, by example, permission to students to investigate cross-disciplinary concepts, trust their curiosity, and engage in open-ended experimentation.
